Frequently Asked Questions
Section 44ADA allows professionals (software, legal, medical, engineering, etc.) with gross receipts ≤₹75 lakh to declare 50% of their receipts as taxable income. The remaining 50% is treated as "deemed expenses" — no proof needed. This dramatically lowers tax for freelancers who don't have many actual expenses to claim. Learn more in our complete 44ADA guide.
If you have 2 dry months per year (no billing), you effectively have only 10 billing months to generate 12 months of income. So your billing per active month needs to be higher. The calculator adjusts your required monthly gross billing upward to account for this — your rate per hour or per project must cover months where you earn nothing.
For international clients, always price in USD. The rate shown in this calculator is the INR-equivalent. Divide by current USD/INR rate to get your USD hourly rate. Use our USD→INR calculator to estimate how much you'll actually receive after forex fees.
44ADA is available to specified professionals (software development, legal, medical, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy, interior decoration). If your work doesn't fall in these categories, or your receipts exceed ₹75L, you'd file under regular business income (44AB) or as a salaried person depending on your employment structure.
